Overview

The EOS R5 pairs a 45 megapixel sensor with 8K internal raw recording in a body Canon deliberately built without a fan, in order to preserve the weather resistance and size expected of a 5-series camera.

The consequence was recording time limits and recovery periods that generated intense scrutiny at launch. Canon published the thermal figures and addressed the estimation and control behaviour in firmware rather than changing the hardware, making this one of the clearest cases in the archive of a design trade-off surfacing as an ownership problem.

Canon EOS R5: firmware 1.1.0 improves temperature detection and recording time control

Canon's first EOS R5 firmware update improved temperature detection and shooting time control in video, improved total shooting time when short clips are recorded with the camera repeatedly powered off and on at room temperature, and added messaging when overheat control is enabled alongside an external HDMI monitor.
